The HRA is assisting with the proposed development of a Fairfield Highland Cultural District. According to the Office of Cultural Development, the goal of a cultural district is to “revitalize a community by building on and creating new cultural opportunities, through unique tax incentives. Once a Cultural District is certified, renovations to historic structures within the district may be eligible for state residential and commercial historic tax credits and the sales of original, one-of-a-kind works of art are exempt from local and state sales tax. Similar programs in other states have resulted in increased occupancy, property renovations, a sense of community identity, increased social activity and jobs.” Click on the following links to find out more about this exciting opportunity for the Fairfield/Highland area: Resolution for Cultural District, Boundaries of the Fairfield Highland Cultural District, Cultural Assets Inventory, and the Louisiana Cultural Districts website.

Your list of Cultural Assets is incomplete. Why aren’t there any artists listed? Highland has long been known to be home to many artists. It seems to me that you really can’t have a cultural district without artists who are actively producing.
(UPDATED COMMENT WITH CORRECT WEBSITE ADDRESS)
I agree Kathryn! I’m actually not sure who exactly compiled the Cultural Assets Inventory, but I have submitted a revised list and I will find out if we can add individual Highland artists to the list as well. If you could help in coming up with that list I’m sure it would be helpful!
