Robinson’s Rescue recently announced the generous donation of land and buildings at 2515 Line Ave from the doctors of the Shreveport Eye Clinic. “We are looking forward to opening our doors in this new location,” said Candy Peavy, Board President. “We will have an abundance of parking for our clients and plenty of room to grow the organization. We will continue to make a positive impact on the community by saving lives through prevention.” In addition to the surgical facilities, the site will include a small dog park at the corner of Line Av and Robinson St. The building renovation is scheduled to be complete by the end of the year. In the meantime, Robinson’s Rescue is still operating in its current location at 504 E. Kings Highway in Shreveport. HRA encourages its members to attend the Mayor’s Community Briefing this Monday, October 10 at 6pm at Municipal Auditorium (705 Elvis Presley Blvd). The purpose of the meeting is to provide information regarding current and proposed initiatives in areas near Highland, such as the Shreveport Common Plan, developments in Ledbetter Heights, and the I-49 Inner City Connector Project. Shreveport Green is selling rain barrels to help plant and garden lovers conserve water during the drought. This attractive, green, 50-gallon barrel (pictured on the left) has a spigot and can collect rain water that can be used to keep your plants alive in this hot, dry weather. Community Renewal will be holding their annual Highland Neighborhood Picnic this Saturday, Sept. 24 at Columbia Park (Columbia St and Creswell Ave). There will be a free lunch, lots of games and activities, and time to meet new neighbors and strengthen the sense of community. The story that has captivated generations is now a emotion-packed musical! C.E. Byrd High School Drama Department presents Little Women the Musical from September 29 – October 1, 2011. Shows will be at 7:00 PM in the C.E. Byrd Auditorium (3201 Line Ave); tickets are $10. HRA will sponsor a thank you potluck supper for First Responders on Shreveport’s National Night Out, which is Tuesday, October 4th at 6:00pm, at Fire Station #7 (corner of Line Ave and Wilkinson St). We hope if you are not involved with another event, you will come out, bring a dish and share a meal with the fire fighters, police officers and others who protect our central city neighborhoods.
The Tankhead Fight Club officially opened this month on the outskirts of Highland (502 Anderson Ave, off Youree Dr near Kings Hwy). This 7000 sqft gym is the only gym in Shreveport to offer authentic Muay Thai classes for students of all shapes and sizes, beginners to advanced. The 25th Annual Centenary Book Bazaar will be held Friday, September 9, from 4pm to 9 pm, and Saturday, September 10, from 9am until 4pm. Admission is free and open to the public. More than 80,000 items will be available for purchase, including paperback and hardback books as well as audio and visual materials such as DVDs, VHS, CDs, and cassette tapes. Most items are priced from 25¢ to $5, with higher-priced rare items reserved for a bid auction. On Saturday, all items become half-priced after 1 pm. The Centenary Book Bazaar is organized and sponsored by the Centenary Muses, a group of ladies dedicated to funding student-centered campus projects and programs not included in the regular college budget.
