Centenary archivist to discuss early recordings of Jimmie Davis in Highland

Restoration University returns April 21 with a special presentation on the Music of Highland.

Chris Brown, archivist at Centenary College, will discuss the musical career of Jimmie Davis 1928-1944 at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 21 at the Women’s Department Club, 802 Margaret Place. The presentation will explore the early recordings Davis made while living in Shreveport’s Highland neighborhood. It will highlight his country songs, blues collaborations with local African American guitarists Oscar Woods and Ed Schaffer and the success of “You Are My Sunshine.”

Brown manages the historic records of Centenary and the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church.  His hobbies include researching, collecting, and sharing Shreveport’s music history.  He hosts the “Romp and Stomp” radio show (Tuesdays, 5-6 PM on Centenary’s radio station, KSCL 91.3 FM) and the Shreveport Songs blog (http://shreveportsongs.blogspot.com).

The talk is free to members of the HRA and $10 to nonmembers. Tickets can be purchased at the door or at restorehighland.org

Restoration University is joint effort between the Highland Restoration Association and Norla Preservation Project.  The bi-annual speaker series offers insight into neighborhood history and restoration design and techniques.  Talks are hosted each spring and fall and are free to members of the HRA.

The Women’s Department Club was built in historic Highland in 1925, six years after a group of ladies formed the club to focus on the strength of women for the promotion of educational, literary and artistic growth of Shreveport and its vicinity.
